NURSERY 3AM
10/31/11
Dear Parents,
Last week the children continued to be enthusiastic about exploring various types of squash. They examined butternut, acorn and spaghetti squash. They also sampled it, as they did the cooked pumpkin the week before. Here Elisabeth mashes the cooked butternut squash.
The children are still creating their own square pumpkin out of a box, based on the book, THE LEGEND OF SPOOKLEY THE SQUARE PUMPKIN, which they asked to hear again two more times. They also decided to add “bumps” to the outside of the pumpkin, as in THE BUMPY LITTLE PUMPKIN and they added “pulp” and seeds to the inside of their pumpkin, requesting crinkly paper and different colors of yarn to replicate the pulp. Eventually, they wanted to add bugs (actually ladybug printed fabric pieces).
Children used flannel board ghosts, pumpkins and yellow and green gourds to create patterns. They played with pumpkin play dough, drew pumpkins using some of the real ones in our classroom as models. Pumpkin and Halloween props were added to our water table. They performed “Five Little Pumpkins” using stick puppets in small groups.
Thanks to Nathan and his family for adding two new trucks to our block corner. Thanks to Dawn and Kevin, Averi’s Mom and Dad for coming in to read DORA’S SPOOKY HALLOWEEN and ONE, TWO, BOO and bringing in a coloring page and goody bag for each child.
In Science, the children used an apple peeler machine to core, peel and slice apples and fed the apple skins to the animals.
Books we read:
HUMBUG WITCH
PUMPKIN SOUP
MRS. MCNOSH AND THE GREAT BIG SQUASH
PUMPKIN DAY, PUMPKIN NIGHT
OLIVIA THE WITCH (a flannel board story)
THE LITTLE ORANGE HOUSE (a paper and scissors story)
Next week more apple and fall related activities, as well as some Halloween follow-up are planned.
Love,
Sue and Nancy
