Nursery 1 Newsletter

Dear Nursery 1 Families,

What a busy month it has been. We are having a wonderful time getting to know all of you and your children.

As we discussed at Parent Orientation, our curriculum for this past month has focused on acclimating the children to their new classroom and our daily routine. We encourage the children to spend time in different centers. We want them to become familiar with the various materials in each center and our expectations for how the materials can be used and cared for. The children are beginning to understand when a center is available to them. Most centers are best suited for a limited number of children; for example two or three children at the sensory table, four children at the play dough table, one child at each easel.  The children are getting used to waiting for turns, identifying when there is an open spot at a center and asserting themselves when it is their turn. The process itself allows the children great opportunities for expressing themselves with their words.

Learning the class routine is a process…one that the children embrace as we know how important routine is to children. From the sound of the wind chimes that lets them know it is time to clean up, singing our “jumping” song before we wash our hands at snack time, gathering at the stairs when it is time to go in from the playground, or looking for their picture on their mailbox so that they can be responsible for work they want to take home, the children are making transitions in our unique Nursery 1 way.  They show such pride in letting us know that they know what comes next in their day. We will continue to work with the children on gaining comfort using the bathroom, becoming familiar with the playground, how to sit together in a large group, and how to sit together in a small group,

We will also begin to generate some classroom rules. We want the children to help us come up with these rules. We will guide them along the lines of keeping each other safe, being respectful of one another, our materials and our environment, but we want them to share their thoughts on what all this means to them. All of these activities help us build a classroom community that we can continue to nurture throughout the school year.

The Pumpkin Patch will be set up next week. And will become a large part of our curriculum for the next few weeks.

Have a wonderful weekend!
